Congress may accept the costs of more F-35s and F-22s

Congress willing to accept the costs of more F-35s and raptor jet F-22s

The F-35 cost and F-22 price for each unit were too expensive and the US Congress had severely cut the budget associated to the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II and the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor. The F-35 is single-seat, single-engine, all-weather stealth multirole fighter with high top speed and the top speed raptor jet F-22 is a fifth-generation single-seat, twin-engine all-weather stealth tactical fighter aircraft.

However, recently the Congress may have changed the direction and is willing to accept the give back $700 million to buy F-35 for the FY 2017 budget and possibly including the raptor jet F-22 cost in the additional budget. This probably represents a response to the global uncertainty and growing air and naval power of Chinese forces in Asia. Some reports indicate that by 2020 the Chinese Air Force may outnumber the USAF.

How much does a fighter jet cost ?

Both the F-35 and F-22 costs per plane make them expensive aircrafts. The F-22 has often been called the best fighter in the world, however it is also the most expensive. According the F-35 program cost, since we built the first F-35, production costs have dropped 55 percent.

The most recently contracted unit costs for Low Rate Initial Production lot 7 (not including the engine) are:

  • F-35A: $98 million
  • F-35B: $104 million
  • F-35C: $116 million

This means that a F-35A purchased in 2018 and delivered in 2020 will be $85 million, which is the equivalent of $75 million in today’s dollars. F-22 raptor cockpit is one of the most expensive parts too.

However, according the F-22 program cost, even though the F-35 is very expensive, it is still much cheaper than the F-22, which costs are US$150 million (flyaway cost for FY2009).

The F-22 raptor top speed may still be classified but some reports suggest the following numbers: Top speed at altitude: Mach 2.25 (1,500 mph, 2,410 km/h) [estimated] top speed at Supercruise: Mach 1.82 (1,220 mph, 1,960 km/h).
