Escort Aircraft carrier Unyo evolved from a modified version of the ocean liner Yawata-Maru. This ocean liner belonged to the Nitta-Maru class cargo liner constructed in Japanese shipyear in the late of 1930s. The Unyo carrier was converted to an escort carrier and commissioned in May 1942. Most of her missions were to ferry and transport aircrafts and supplies. The escort carrier Unyo “Cloud Hawk” was sunk by the submarine USS Barb, 17 September 1944.
