The Alamein battle for Flames of War wargame

Flamers of War is a miniature based wargame that allows to replay company level battles from the European, Pacific and North African Theatres of World War Two. The models are highly detailed and usually at 1/100 scale, which roughly represents 15 mm figure scale and miniature tanks, trucks or artillery. Aiircrafts, which represent air support, are also available in the form of fighter bombers (like the Hawker Hurricane) and ground attack aircraft (like the Ilyushin Il-2 “Shturmovik”). These aircrafts are  generally being represented by 1:144 scale models, so you can appreciate more the details.

Rules

Regarding the rules, in the 1st Edition rulebook basic army lists were provided for the mid-war period (1942–1943), while Battlefront published early (1939–1941) and late war (1944–1945) army lists on their website (subsequently these early and late war lists were removed). The 2nd Edition of the rulebook was published in 2006. The 3rd Edition of the rules was released on March 10, 2012.

I’m very much impressed by the recent release of Afrika Korps units, since the detailed in increasing significantly. Of course, it would depend on your painting skills, or whether you can ask someone to paint them for you, but the result is impressive. The original point of Flames of War units is that they are sold as a package or organization unit instead of selling individual tanks or infantry as usual model makers. Here you can buy a platoon of tanks, an artillery battery, an infantry company with trucks and even the entire formation of the Afrika Korps as yo can see below. It can be very exciting to play Desert battles with these kind of units.

Under the leadership of Generalfeldmarschall Erwin Rommel, the Deutsches Afrika Korps (or DAK) trounced the British Eighth Army time and time again. The ‘Desert Fox’, as he became known, gained an almost mythical status as a military genius to both friend and foe alike. Rommel owed his success to a combination of his own experience and hard-driving nature, and the superb troops he commanded. Serving as a Leutnant in the First World War, Rommel showed an aggressive style that led to spectacular victories over forces much stronger than his own.

The eyes of the world are on the complex and bloody campaign unfolding in the Western Desert of Egypt and Libya. Desert Rats: British Forces in the Desert 1942-43

The Desert Rats are the only thing standing in the way of Axis conquest of North Africa. Despite suffering repeated defeats at the hands of Rommel’s Afrika Korps, they remain undaunted. Their speedy Crusader and Honey tanks can run circles around their opposition, backed up by the heavier Grant squadrons. Their motorised infantry are equally adept in attack or defence. With support from the Royal Artillery and the Desert Air Force, they are a formidable and versatile force.  INSIDE YOU WILL FIND:  * Background on the British Eighth Army and its defence of Egypt in the Battle of Gazala and the First and Second Battles of El Alamein.  * Instructions on how to build a Grant Armoured Squadron, Crusader Armour Squadron, Honey Armoured Squadron, or Motor Company.  * A detailed painting guide to help you prepare your British force for battle.   Desert Rats is an A4 hardback, full colour, 48 page book
