Submarines of the JMSDF


The Japanese modern submarine fleet

 

The JMSDF plans to increase the number of submarines from the current 16 to 22 ships.The submarine fleet of the JMSDF is composed of many advanced units, such as new diesel-electric submarines, which are unique and considered the most advanced in the entire navies of the world.The Japanese Navy has a strict planning which allows them to retire obsolete units quickly and replace them by the most advanced units they can construct.

The later plans to increase the fleet submarines to 22 units was early announced in 2010 and it was the first time in the last 36 years to grow the submarines fleet in numbers significantly.
