Team Yankee Flames of War T-72 tank platoon

The Team Yankee miniature series is a Flames of War inspired table top game that uses scale models to reproduce tactical battles of a hypothetical World War III. The tank and infantry models seem to be at 1/100 scale as well as the helicopters. Some attack planes such as A-10 and SU-25 may become 1/144 scale.

The mold and plastic details look very excellent, the only thing is that they still need to be painted. But this is a part of the hobby and entertainment even for a table top wargame. This also adds flexibility to choose and design your own patterns, camouflage and national symbols in the units.

Why Team Yankee name for a miniature table top game series?

The name “Team Yankee” is also a novel “Team Yankee: A Novel of World War III”. In fact, this is a revised and updated edition of the classic Cold War novel Team Yankee reminds us once again might have occurred had the United States and its Allies taken on the Russians in Europe, had cooler geopolitical heads not prevailed. For 45 years after World War II, East and West stood on the brink of war. When Nazi Germany was destroyed, it was evident that Russian tank armies had become supreme in Europe, but only in counterpart to US air power. In 1945 US and UK bombers sent a signal to the advancing Russians at Dresden to beware of what the Allies could do. Likewise when the Russians overran Berlin they sent a signal to the Allies what their land armies could accomplish. Thankfully the tense standoff continued on either side of the Iron Curtain for nearly half a century.During those years, however, the Allies beefed up their ground capability, while the Soviets increased their air capability, even as the new jet and missile age began (thanks much to captured German scientists on both sides). The focal point of conflict remained in central Germany―specifically the flat plains of the Fulda Gap―through which the Russians could pour all the way to the Channel if the Allies proved unprepared (or unable) to stop them.
Team Yankee posits a conflict that never happened, but which very well might have, and for which both sides prepared for decades. This former New York Times bestseller by Harold Coyle, now revised and expanded, presents a glimpse of what it would have been like for the Allied soldiers who would have had to meet a relentless onslaught of Soviet and Warsaw Pact divisions.

It takes the view of a US tank commander, who is vastly outnumbered during the initial onslaught, as the Russians pull out all the cards learned in their successful war against Germany. Meantime Western Europe has to speculate behind its thin screen of armor whether the New World can once again assemble its main forces―or willpower―to rescue the bastions of democracy in time.

The Soviet tanks keep coming, he counted eight, no nine, but more kept coming. They spread out slowly into line abreast, unaware that Müller’s company of Leopard 2 tanks were watching them from the forest just 1500 meters away. Müller could wait no longer. ‘FIRE’, he ordered and the world around the Soviet tanks erupted into flame and destruction…”

Team Yankee T-72 Tankovy Company

Following the classic Soviet doctrine, the T-72 was easy to manufacture, simple to use, robust, and reliable. It mounted a powerful 125mm gun with an autoloader to replace the loader, producing a compact and relatively light tank with a significantly greater level of armour protection, powered by a reliable, tried and tested engine. The updated T-72A saw widespread use, being the mainstay of the Soviet tank forces facing the US Army across the Iron Curtain, including the 15th ‘Mozyr’ Guards Tank Division in Czechoslovakia. The latest model has the improved 2A46 gun firing fin-stabilised ammunition capable of penetrating any tank in the world. A new laser rangefinder and stabilisation system give it unprecedented accuracy, while the bulged armour on the turret front conceals a high-tech composite armour radically increasing its survivability.

The excellence of the M109 self-propelled howitzer is evidenced by the fact that it is used by every Western army on NATO’s Central Front apart from the French. Team Yankee A-10 Warthog

Although its official designation is the Thunderbolt II, the rather odd-looking A-10 is commonly, if unflatteringly, known as the ‘Warthog’. The A-10 is built around a massive 30mm GAU-8/A Avenger seven-barrelled Gatling gun that fires depleted uranium rounds, and in its tank-busting role, carries TV-guided Maverick missiles. On top of that, its armoured cockpit and high-mounted engines give it outstanding resilience when hit by enemy fire. If you’re familiar with resin and metal vehicle kits, you’ll notice something different about the Warthog model – instead of metal, the weapons and engine turbofans are made from a high-quality polyester resin. Compared to the heavier polyurethane resin used for the body of the aircraft, it is softer and more flexible, making it more resilient for the smaller parts. (You’ll notice it is a paler grey colour). It feels a bit like the hard styrene of injection-moulded plastic models, but you need to use Super glue with it, because it won’t ‘melt’ with plastic cement. It’s a good material for aircraft parts, especially the under-wing weapons; being much lighter than metal, they are less likely to accidentally get knocked off during gaming.
